Based in the heart of Dublin, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) was established in 1784 and is currently Ireland’s largest medical institution with over 3000 students from 60 countries. The college is one of the five recognised colleges of the National University of Ireland integrating schools of medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy and nursing and providing both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of medical education.
Axiseng have a long standing relationship with RCSI, having carried out numerous refurbishing projects on their Dublin city centre campus.
The client had a need for good quality student accommodation to house both Irish and international students. The project consisted of the refurbishment of a dilapidated century old residence to modern standards. Due to the age of the building, modifications of the existing structure was not a viable option.
Axiseng designed the plan to use surface dado trunking in order to provide power and IT functions to each of the bedrooms without the need for chasing walls, thus cutting construction time and costs. The distribution of services was carefully coordinated to minimize disturbance to the old timber structural elements of the building.
The new student residences at Mercer Court and Millin House will provide for a comfortable and secure environment for the talented young individuals from all over the globe to live and study as well as boost Ireland’s reputation as one of the top academic leaders in the world.
