Located in the heart of Harold’s Cross in Dublin 6, Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services is a 218 bed hospice providing specialist care for people with a wide range of needs from rehabilitation to end of life care.
The project involved surveying the existing campus which had been developed on an ad hoc basis since 1879. The suitability of the existing services installations were assessed and a Masterplan was produced by the design team. The primary focus of the plan in relation to services was centralization of the primary plant and energy centre with a view to providing highly efficient sustainable energy generation solutions.
The campus was originally developed in a random manner with buildings and services unintegrated. The client wanted to develop a Masterplan for future development and for linking the buildings both in terms of circulation and services provision.
Axiseng was commissioned by the client to lead the complex mechanical and electrical services design for the Masterplan.
The age of the existing buildings and associated installations, fragmented layout of structures on campus and the location of existing plant areas inhibiting future development all posed challenges on the project. Axiseng proposed a central energy centre to be constructed so that existing plant areas could be removed or plugged in to a central system, thus replacing inefficient existing plant with central efficient plant and sustainable options. As a result, the Masterplan created a system to assist with more efficient operations of the campus.
