Located in Phibsborough on the North side of Dublin City, Mountjoy Prison is a closed, medium security prison for adult males. It is the main committal prison for Dublin city and county with an operational capacity of 554 prisoners.
The project consisted of the complete refurbishment and sanitisation of the A-Wing and B-Wing building cell blocks which comprised a total of 297 single occupant cells, class offices, shower and sluice areas, medical suites and plant areas. The cell accommodation in the A-Wing at ground floor level also included a number of wheelchair accessible cells.
The project included the provision of close observation cells at basement level. A new smoke extract system was installed to serve the basement to protect the safety of the prisoners and staff. In addition, a new dedicated plant room to provide heating and hot water throughout each building was installed. Electrical services included the replacement and enhancement of the existing lighting systems and the provision of additional power to the cells.
The mechanical and electrical services design was carefully executed by the Axiseng team as the entire project was completed during normal working hours within a live prison environment with minimum disruption to daily prison activities whilst maintaining the high security levels associated with this type of project.
